Mathematical Colloquium

The purpose of the Mathematical Colloquium is the local and international exchange on current research topics from various fields of mathematics. The talks start, during the semester and alternating weekly with the IWR Colloquium on Scientific Computing, always on Thursdays at 16h c.t. in the Hörsaal Mathematikon

Following the merger of the (now former) two mathematical institutes in Heidelberg to a single Institute for Mathematics, the Mathematical Colloquium is intended in particular to further promote the exchange between pure and applied mathematics. All six sections of the Institute contribute to the diverse program, so that it reflects the entire breadth of mathematics in Heidelberg. Speakers are asked to make their talk accessible to a broad audience and ideally to offer a motivation at Master's level at the beginning, so that our students can also benefit from the colloquium.

Practical Details

For speakers

Thank you for accepting our invitation to the Mathematical Colloquium! Travel and accommodation will be arranged by the hosting group. In preparing your talk, we would be grateful if you could aim at an interested but rather diverse audience, and include some motivation and context. Please send the title and abstract to your local contact and/or the organizers (P. Schwer / J. Walcher) at least ten days in advance, so that we can properly advertise your talk. You are welcome to include an image to enliven the poster. On the day of your talk, faculty members will meet around 15h45 on the top floor of the Mathematikon for tea and cake and would be glad to greet you there. Your talk will begin at 16h15 in the lecture room on the ground floor of the Mathematikon and should last around 50–60 minutes. Blackboard, media-based or mixed talks are equally welcome. We look forward to your visit and lecture!

For participants

Any interested person from nearby or far away is welcome to attend the Mathematical Colloquium. Talks are advertised well ahead of time by posters throughout the Mathematikon. Announcements are sent by email to all members of the math faculty, and to external people via a separate colloquium mailing list. Please get in touch if you wish to be added. The colloquium is also listed at HePhySTO. Talk etiquette: If you come on time, you may leave early (but quietly). Don't bring anything that will distract you or others. The best seats are in front. Questions are encouraged, especially after the talk.
