About us

In April 2023, the Institute for Mathematics (IMa) was founded by fusing the Institute for Applied Mathematics and the Mathematical Institute. Traditionally, mathematics is divided into “pure” and “applied” mathematics. Separations of this kind are something the MAThematics Center Heidelberg (MATCH) wants to overcome. The fusion is one step in this direction: Mathematics in Heidelberg brings together theoretical mathematical fundamental research of excellent quality and up-to-date innovative research in classic and new areas of application. In particular, new areas of application arise from a continually growing mathematization of sciences such as biology and medicine as well as the humanities.

The new concept can be seen in current third-party funded projects, participations, cooperations, and initatives. Third-party funded projects are

  • SFB/Transregio 191 Symplectic Structures in Geometry, Algebra and Dynamics,
  • SFB/Transregio 326 Geometry and Arithmetic of Uniformized Structures (GAUS),
  • GRK 2229 Asymptotic Invariants and Limits of Groups and Spaces, and
  • GRK 1953 Statistische Modellierung komplexer Systeme.

The institute participates in

  • SFB 1324 Mechanismen und Funktionen des Wnt-Signalwegs, and
  • the Cluster of Excellence STRUCTURES.

Morevoer, a cooperation exists between the Institute of Computer Science, the IWR, and the Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI). Also a new Data Science Initiative was started.
