Emil Artin Lectures
This distinguished lecture series is named for Emil Artin, one of the leading algebraists and number theorists of the 20th century.
Born on March 4, 1898 in Vienna, Emil Artin studied under Philipp Furtwängler, and under Gustav Herglotz in Leipzig. After graduation in 1921, he went to Hamburg where he became Full Professor in 1926. He was forced to emigrate to the United States of America by the National Socialists in 1936. He was first in Bloomington, Indiana, and after 1946 in Princeton, New Jersey. He returned to Hamburg in 1958, where he did on December 20th, 1962.
His contributions to mathematics include the eponymous Artin L-functions, the Artin reciprocity law, or Artinian rings have become fundamental terms in mathematics.

Er ging anschliessend nach Hamburg, und wurde dort bereits 1926 zum Ordinarius ernannt wurde. Die Nationalsozialisten zwangen ihn 1936 zur Emigration in die USA. Er fand eine Anstellung zunächst in Bloomington, Indiana und 1946 in Princeton.1958 kehrte er nach Hamburg zurück, wo er 1962 starb.
